ABSTRACT
An introduction to optimal Wiener filtering and its application to condition monitoring of local damages in gearboxes is given in the paper. This work consists of two parts: in the first part the idea of optimal filtering proposed by Wiener is discussed and simple illustration by simulation is provided. The second part shows obstacles of Wiener approach, however his concept of optimization of filter is still useful. It has been show that spectral kurtosis and Wiener IIR filter are the same. As an illustration of practical application of optimal filter to local damage detection results obtained for planetary gearboxes used in mining industry are showed.
